SHALE OIL INDUSTRY.

DEPOSITS IN AUSTRALIA. [from our own correspondent.] SYDNEY. Aug, 4, One of the Sydney newspapers, in urging strongiy the revival of the shale oil industry, has surprised the public by revealing the fact that shale oil to the value of £2,690,710 has been won in New South Wales. There does not appear "to have been any systematic search for shale deposits in this State er, indeed, in any othex part of Australia. The deposits ■have practically discovered themselves and have announced their presence by outcropping. It was estimated a couple of years ago that the reserves and probable reserves of oil shale in this State amounted to 40.000,000 tons, capable of giving 3.500,000,000 gallons of crude oil. Tills, however, took no account either of the oil contained in coal deposits, or of the low-erade shale. The belief of experts is that the estimate two years ago in tons and gallons could to-day be approximately doubled.
