BUTTER IN FAIR DEMAND. CHEESE QUOTATIONS STEADY. ■The Department of Agriculture has received the following cablegram, dated July 31, from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, London:— Butter.—lhere is fair demand. Official quotations are:— New Zealand. Finest salted: July 31, 172s to 174s per cwt; July 24, 168s to 1725. Unsalted: July 31, 172s to 1745; July 24, 170s to Other qualities: duly 31, 162s to 1645. Australian.—Salted: July 31, 166s to 168s per cwt; July 24, 164s to 168s. Unsalted: July 31, 168s to 1725; July 24, 16t>s to 170s. Other qualities: July 31, 136s to 1545. Argentine.—Unsalted : July 31, 154s to 158s, up to-160s per cwt; July 24, 154s up to 160s. Other qualities: July 31. 146s to 1525. New Zealand.—Coloured: July 31, 82s to 83s, up to 84s per cwt; July 24, 82s to 84s. Shipments of New Zealand produce arrived this week per Port Curtis and Port Hardy. Tallow. —The market is very quiet on account of the coal strike and there was no auctipn this week. Prices are the same as last quotations. Apples.—New Zealand are done except for a few small lots ex Mahia. Sturmers are clearing at lis 6d to 12s per case.

Hemp.—'The Manila market is firm at the advance. "J" grade, August-Oc-tober shipments, sold at £42. The sisal market is quiet. Tanganyika No. 1, JulySeptember shipments are quoted at £43 sellers, but there are no buyers over £42 10s, . The New Zealand market continues quiet, with little speculative business reported. Highpoints, £36 10s; fair, £33 10s j but consumers are not interested. Oats.—The market is quiet. English best white, old crop, 31s to 3.1s 6d per 3361b-; other qualities down to 275. Only small business is reported in oats No. 2 Canadian Western. July-August shipments aro offered at 26s Plate, 21s 6d, nominal value. New Zealand A Gartons,. 26s per 3201b. MUIR'S GOLD REEFS. MACHINERY FROM ENGLAND. ' [by telegraph.—own correspondent.] TAURANGA, Tuesday. A cablegram has been received from the London agents of Muir's Gold Reefs advising that the manufacturers hope to complete tests of the motor and pump in October. Other new, machinery for the mine will be shipped in September. The new plant is mainly for the purpose oi .-removing the water from the .reefs 'the 500 ft. level. Tho lifting capacity will be from 1200 to 1500 gallons per minute. The machinery should reach New Zealand about November. It will be installed as soon as possible after its arrival and" there is every probability that it will be operating within a month after it reaches To Puke. CHICAGO WHEAT MARKET. Australian and N.Z. HIDES AND SHEEPSKINS. ' AUCKLAND MARKET PRICES. Prices for hides at tho Auckland hido and skin aale yesterday were on a par with those at tho last sale. There waa a good demand lor dry sheepskins, though salted dropped in price. There was a slight falling off in the demand for calfskins. Pelts made their first .appearance and a small line was cleared. The following prices were realised:— Hides.—Cow: Best grades, 4|d to s}d per lb.; second and cut, 4d to 4Jd. Ox: Best light, s*d to 6d; medium, Bid to B>Sd; heavy, 8!d 'to 9d; heavy, with substance, 9id to Did; rough, scored and cut, 45d to Gd. x l{ip and runners: Best grades, 6jd to 7ld; second grade, 4Jd to 6Jd. Yearlings: Best, 7id to 7}d; second. 6sd to 6id. Calfskins.—Light, 9Jd to Bj-d? medium, 9sd to lOd; heavy, 7|d to 8d; cut and meaty, light. 7*} d to B}d; slippy and inferior, s}d to 6d. Sheepskins.—Dried, threequarter to full wool, fine crossbred, lid to Hid; medium, 10J4 to lid; coarse, lOd to 10td; faulty, Bid to B|d; damaged and broken, 6}d to 8?d; half wools, medium to fine crossbred, 9-jd to lOJd; faulty and coarse. 8d to 9d; damaged, 6d to 7id. MARKET REPORTS. FRUIT AND PRODUCE PRICES. A large shipment of Sydney fruit made its appearance on the Auckland city markets yesterday, the better quality oranges and. lemons commanding good prices, The demand for apples during the last few weeks has not oeen good, though it is expected they will move more quickly when warmer weather sets in. Local oranges are selling well, but lemons have slightly eased in value. The prices for all varieties of apples were below those ruling last week. Poorman and other oranges sold in advance of last week. There were fair supplies of vegetables on the market. The demand remained moderate. Potatoes dropped in price somewhat, while pumpkins advanced Is a cwt. Cabbages, cauliflowers, and swedes -kept steady. There was no change in othei' field produce prices. Dairy produce prices were on a par with last week. Prices ruling were:— FRUIT.
