GOVERNMENT ACTUARY.
MR, C. GOSTELOW APPOINTED YOUNG AND BRILLIANT MAN. A SUCCESSFUL CAREER. Tby telegraph.—own correspondent.] "WELLINGTON. Friday. • Mr. C. Gostelow, who lias been appointed by the Public Service Commissioner to the position of Government Actuary, for some time past has held the offices of deputy-commissioner, actuary and secretary of the Government Insurance Department, and also -actuary of the Friendly Societies Department and actuary to tho National Provident Fund. Mr. Gostelow has had a brilliant career, and is the youngest mai in New Zealand and Australia holding tho fellowship degree of the Institute of Actuaries (London). This degree covers the field of finance, economics, insurance, law and medical science, and is universally recognised as the highest diploma in the actuarial and life assurance world, Mr. Gostelow has taken an active part in tho affairs of tho Actuarial Society of Australasia, and in 11920 was a member of the council of that body. He has hid an exceptionally wide and varied training in the sphere of life assurance as tho result of his experience first in the head office of the Mutual Life and Citizens" Assurance Company, then as assistant actuary and accountant of the City Mutual Life Assurance Society, and finally as actuary, secretary and deputy-commis-sioner of the Government Life Insurance Department. Mr. Gostelow is the son of Sir. E. E. Gostelow, headmaster of the public school of South Strathgeld, one of Sydney's most important suburbs, and was born on November 5, 1891, at Aniaroo, New South Wales. Mr. Gostelow joined the head office of. the Mutual Life and Citizens' Assurance Company, where he gained exceptional experience in his profession. Later he accepted the position of assistant actuary to the City Mutual Life Assurance Society. When the New Zealand Government in 1921 required a qualified actuary for its National Provident and Friendly Societies Department Mr. Gostelow was selected for the position. On the amalgamation of the Government Insurance Department, the , State Fire Department, the National Provident and Friendly Societies Department and the Public Service Superannuation Fund the whole of the actuarial work of the Government was brought under a single control, and Mr. Gostelow was appointed assistant actuary of tho combined departments. Almost simultaneously with the taking over of his new position Mr. Gostelow was advised by cable that he had been successful in passing the final examination of the Institute of Actuaries, thereby qualifying for the coveted "F.1.A.," the highest degree in the actuarial world.
