MAMAKU BUSH ROAD.
PROGRESS OF THE METALLING A DEVIATION TO BE MADE. The road through the Mamaku Bush, on the main highway between Hamilton and Rotorua, is still impassable for motor traffic. The work of metalling has been in progress for some months, and there is every reason to believe that it will be completed before next winter. Fourteen miles of the road on the Auckland side of the Mamaku hill have been declared Government road and will be metalled at the entire expense of the Main Highways Board. A certain amount of work has already been accomplished. The first three miles from the Rotorua end have been partly surfaced under contract, and another contract has been let for a small amount of widening. The work of surfacing and metalling the next seven miles has been in hand during the past six months and is now nearing completion. At the Tirau end it will be necessary to construct a four-mile deviation to carry the road on higher ground than it follows at present, and thus protect' it from the regular flooding it is subjected to in winter. Surveys for this work have been taken out, and it is hoped to call for tenders in the spring.
