CONTROL OF TRAFFIC.

AGREEMENTS WITH POLICE. POSITION IN WELLINGTON. COUNCIL EXPECTS RENEWAL. [by telegraph.—own correspondent.] WELLINGTON. Friday. The notice given by the police to terminate the traffic control agreements in Wellington and Auckland was mentioned at last night's meeting of the Wellington City Council, and the opinion was expressed that a new agreement would be made. Mr. J. Aston, remarking that the term of police control was nearing its end, asked what was being done to provide the traffic officei-s needed at a number of points. Mr. M. F. Luckie, who presided, said it was unlikely that police control would ehd, though a new arrangement would have to be entered into. The City Council was awaiting the decision of the Minister of Justice, Hon. F. J. Rolleston. The latter had stated that there were at present four or five contracts between the police and the municipalities of Wellington, Auckland, Christchurch and Dunedin. The Wellington agreement was different from the others. Mr. Luckie said ho had been informed by the police that the Minister desired to have all the systems co-ordinated and extended. There were more street corners where supervision would have to be exercised. The matter of regulating pedestrian traffic was one which the City Council would have to take up. The position in regard to crossings had altered. Once there were wooden crossings over macadam streets and when the macadam disappeared the need for crossings seemed to have disappeared also, but to-day the need for more crossing places, marked and at right angles to traffic, was apparent. The coroner, Mr. E. Page, had drawn attention to deaths resulting from the carelessness of pedestrians. Mr. Aston: Is nothing being done in the meanwhile in regard .to the danger points ? Mr. Luckie_said the police could take over no new points until the new arrangement was entered into, but there would not be long to wait.
