TWO SHOCKING EXPLOSIONS

BLASTING IN SYDNEY. ONE DEATH FROM INJURIES. THREE OTHERS BADLY HURT. WORKER LOSES BOTH EYES. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received 10.5 p.m.) A. and N.Z. SYDNEY, July 30. Two separate explosions occurred at works which are in course of construction for the Water Board. Both explosions occurred at the same time. One was at the pumping station, and the other in the vicinity of the wheat silos at White Bay. At the pumping station, after a number of charges of gelignite had been exploded, it was thought that the shaft was clear, but apparently one of the workmen struck a detonator with his pick when he was clearing out the debris from the other charges. In this explosion, Edward Glassop lost both his eyes, and William Evans was badly injured. In the course of rock blasting operations at White Bay six charges of gelignite were loaded, but only two were fired. Two men, George Hall and John Fazey. went to examine the result of the two charges, when there was a terrific explosion, which was caused by one of the other charges igniting. Hall, who had both his legs blown off, died later in the hospital. Fazey received severe injuries. The cause of the ignition of the third charge is a mystery.
