WAITAKERE RANGES.
Sir, —I have often read letters and heard about the Waitakere Ranges, but until a iew days ago I had never visited any of its parts. In company with three others, one of whom knows the Ranges thoroughly and guided us, I visited the Auckland City Council's Pukematakeo Kauri Forest Scenic Reserve. It is a wonderful place, full of charms, natural beauties and wonders. What surprised me most was the number and tameness of the native pigeons. We saw a number of them, some only a few yards above us on trees, and when we threw a stick at them they only flew from one branch to another. We also saw a number of tuis and parakeets, and their singing was beautiful to listen to. And the view from the trig station is great beyond description. What a wonderful place this is, and that within 18 miles from Queen Street. It took us only 47 minutes to drive, from Customs Street to this range, and when the new concrete road is finished, which wiil be next September, it will take less than 40 mintues to drive to this wonderland. We Aucklanders do not know what we have. H.M.
