JAM FROM SHIP'S STORES. INDIAN FIREMAN FINED. The theft of a tin of jam, valued at 6s, was admitted in the Police Court yesterday by Hassan Kassin, an Indian fireman on the steamer Wirral. The second officer said the jam was issued to the men. It was part, of tliu ship's stores and was not to be taken away. Frank Penrose, wharf patrolman, said he saw accused going off the wharf with a parcel under his coat. When accosted lie admitted having a tin of jam. He said he was going to give it to a friend. The magistrate, Mr. Poynton. imposed a fine pf £2-and ordered the return of the jam to the ship. John Edward Caddy, aged 26, admitted deserting from the Arawa at Wellington on February 16. Accused said he was a fireman on the vessel and since February had been in various occupations. He was* ordered to pay £2 17s, 6s expenses incurred in his arrest, in default, seven davs' imprisonment. A charge of resisting a constable was admitted by Leslie Thomas Raymond Palmer, aged 37. Sergeant Calwell said the circumstances were not serious. Accused struggled in a taxi. The magistrate ordered accused to come up Tor sentence within six months for resisting the constable and convicted and discharged him on a charge of drunkenness. Bertram Augustin O'Connor, aged 32 was remanded until August 3 on a charge of wilful exposure in Silver - Road, Epsom. Senior-Detective Hammond said further charges were pending. Bail was allowed in a surety of £IOO, accused being oidered to report, daily to th« police.
