G.B.S. STOPS A PLAY.
LESSON IN GOOD UNIONISM.
The organisers of a Labour demonstration at Alexandra Palace wished to include in the programme the play " The Showing up of Blanco Posnet," by Mr. George Bernard Shaw. When approached Mr. Shaw replied :
Under no circumstances can any play of mine be performed without payment of the standard author's fee. A Labour Advisory Council ought to understand this as a point of trade unionism What is more, unless you can assure me that the 6d for admission will go to the players, and not to any other non-theatri-cal body, the performance must be classed as amateur, and the amateur fee (two or three guineas—l forget which) paid to the Society of Authors. It is hard enough for my poorer fellow authors to meet the competition of my nlays without the additional handicap of having them performed gratuitously. You see the point, I hope.
