HARBOUR FOR YACHTS.

ST. MARY'S BAY PROJECT.

LARGE AREA FOR CRAFT,

A WATERFRONT IMPROVEMENT.

Further details of the pleasure boat harbour which, the Auckland Harbour Bo§rd proposes to construct at St. Mary's Bay were given by the harbourmaster; Captain H. H. Sergeant, during the course of his lecture to yachtsmen at.the Navy League Club rooms last evening. By the aid of,a plan Captain Sergeantshowed that it was proposed to construct the protecting wall from the end of the Shelly Beach reef along to - the top of the edge of the reef enclosing the bay. Following this line the wall would sweep out from the shore and then continue approximately eastwards to a point about in line with the western wall -of the Freeman's Bay reclamation. There would be a gap in the wall for the passage of boats approximately opposite the St. Mary's Bay jetty and another opening between tho extreme end of the wall and the western tide deflector. Among the- detail on the plan was shown a batter on the inner side of the wall from the Shelly Beach end to the central gap to provide, hauling up sites for boats and sites for clubhouses, approached by a graded road from Curran Street, skirting tho cliffs of Point Erin Park and joining the wall near the baths. The boat harbour is part of the new waterfront . development scheme recently inaugurated by the board. A start has already been made with the retaining wall for the now reclamation of 28 acres .to the west of the Western Wharf. Captain Sergeant explained that when this work had reached a certain 1 stage the boat harbour wall would be started from the Shelly Beach end and .both walls would then proceed simultaneously. When the boat harbour wall was sufficiently advanced suction dredges would pump the silt' out of the shallow St. Mary's Bay and deposit it in the new reclamation area. Captain Sergeant mentioned that the' boat harbour would have in area of approximately 215 acres.
