PILLAGING OF CARGO.
DECREASE AT LYTTELTON.
[BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] CHRISTCHURCH. Saturday. Recently there has been a mild epidemic of cargo pillaging at Lyttelton, but it is nothing to what occurred there years ago. Representatives of various shipping companies all agree that there is a small wave of thieving at present, bnt consider it will soon pass over and' perhaps not come again for years. The vigilance of the police and customs officers was the reason given for the small amount of pillaging which goes on. The customs officers said nothing very valuable could be taken off vessels, as tho new arrivals would have to secrete the goods on their bodies. There had been no attempts recently to broach any bulky cargo.
