THAMES AFFAIRS.
CLOSING ABRAHAM STREET. [BY TELEGRAPH. OWN CORRESPONDENT.] THAMES. Wednesday. An objection to the procedure adopted by the Thames Borough Council in the closing of Abraham Street- was voiced by Mr- Mackay when a letter from Mr. •J. H. Salmon, S.M., advising confirmation of a decision of electors to close the street, was read at a council meeting. Mr. Mackay's contention was that a sitting of the Court should have been advertised for the purpose of hearing objections. The town clerk quoted the section of the Act- governing the question under discussion. At a later stage after consideration in committee it was decider! to place a valuation of £3OO on the street to be closed. The council of the Thames School of Mines met this week, the president, Mr. T. W. Pihodes, M.P., presiding. Messrs. Judd, Price and Shepherd were appointed a sub-committee to draw up a schedule of classes for boys wishing to enter the engineering and allied trades. Local industrial firms and garages had promised preference to the school pupils. The Thames Harbour Board has appointed Mr. A. H. Lockie, of Auckland, to the post of dredgemaster of the board's recently-constructed dredge. He will take up his duties within the next few days.
