LICENSES IN THAMES.

NEW HOTEL FOR WHITIANGA. t

IMPROVEMENT IN TYPE.

OWNERS CONGRATULATED.

[BV TELEGBAMI. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] THAMES. Wednesday, An adjourned meeting of the Thames Licensing Committee was held at noon to-day to receive plans and specifications of a new hotel for Whitianga. The chairman, Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M., presided. Mr. E. J. Clendon, in submitting the plans, stated that the new building would cost about £7OOO. It would contain upwards of 20 rooms and when completed would be the most up-to-date hostelry in the Thames electorate. Completion was expected early in November. When approving the plans, the chairman congratulated the owners on the great improvement shown on this type of house. He said the committee would like to se«» more houses of this class in its district. Mr. L. J. Stevens, Auckland, appeared on behalf of the Auckland owners of the Junction Hotel. He said he understood t!je committee had expressed the opinion that the question ot rebuilding might have to be considered at its next annual meeting. An inspection by an architect had since shown that there was no doubt as to the stability of the building. He would submit that rebuilding was quite unnecessary. Certain works, however, were urgently required, and when, completed, at a cost of £ISOO to £IBOO, would bring the house well up to the required standard. A new house would mean the financial ruin of the owners. He would ask for an understanding that the suggested works would be sufficient to comply with the committee's requirements. The chairman said the question of painting had been waived in fairness to the owners, pending a decision as to the building of new premises. Mr. Stevens said the responsibility for painting rested with the licensee. Mr. R. B. Young, Auckland, architect, submitted plans and specifications of the proposed works, whicli provided for the raising and consolidation of the foundations, installation of a new and more sanitary drainage system and generally bringing the building to the standard required by the authorities. The chairman said he would place the evidence submitted before the full committee and communicate its decision to the owners.
