TIMBER FOR FIREWOOD.
LARGE QUANTITIES WASTED. RAILWAY FREIGHTS BLAMED. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.) RAETIHI. Wednesday. At a meeting of the Raetihi Chamber of Commerce the matter of railway freights on firewood was discussed. It was stated that the high cost of railway freights had crippled the firewood industry in the district. If cheaper freights could be obtained it would not only heip to put the industry on its feet, but at the same time help to provide a great deal of work in the locality, where an enormous quantity of timber suitable for firewood was going to waste. One speaker said the cost of sending a truckload of firewood to Wellington was £4 17s. This price was considered unreasonable, and the consequence was that no firewood was being sent away. By disposing of Hie wood more laiid would be brought into productivity. The chairman considered that an enormous waste was occurring of a commodity that would be of great benefit to town dwellers, especially those far removed from bush areas. It was decided to. refer the matter to the Minister of Railways and to seek the support of other local bodies.
