AUSTRALIAN CRICKETERS.

FIRST SCOTTISH MATCH. WESTERN TEAM OUT FOR 183. VISITORS 259 FOR THREE. TWO CENTURIES NOTCHED. V By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received 5.5 p.m.) Keuter. LONDON. July 17. The Australian cricketers to-day commenced a match against West of Scotland at Glasgow. The weather was warm and the wicket hard. There was a large j attendance. Collins, Hendry, Wood full. Grimmett and Mai ley stood out of the visitors' team. j McGuire. won the toss for the home | side, which went to the wickets. Gregory j and Everett opened the attack. Kerr! showed a partiality for the fast bowling. Re batted stylishly, but the bowlers soon took command, and at luncheon three wickets wore down for 65 runs. When the game was resumed the wickets fell more rapidly. At one stage the score was 134 for eight wickets. Andrews and Richardson bowled well, and Everett was also more successful. The batsmen wore compelled to play always on the defensive and the scoring was slow. It was an innovation for Bardsley to send in Ponsford and Oldfield to open Australia's first, innings. The pair got going early and scored at a rapid rate. After Oldfield had been dismissed it became a race between Ponsford and Macartney to reach a century. Frequent changes of bowling proved unavailing. Both batsmen gave finished exhibitions and scored freely all round the wickets off the easy bowling. Macartney was the first to reach his century. Then ho gave an easy catch in the long field. In the same over Ponsford was dismissed. Both had played sound and forceful cricket. Details of the scores arc:— WEST OF SCOTLAND.—First Innings. A DRAW AT LIVERPOOL. ADVANTAGE TO VISITORS. Renter. LONDON. July 16. The cricket match, Australia v. Lancashire, ended in a draw to-day. There were 2000 spectators. Lancashire followed on. Makepeace and Hallows were very shaky at the beginning. They were frequently beaten by 'Gregory's pace, but the latter was off the wicket. Most of the runs came from Liyder, who was erratic. Hallows scored from the latter freely, straight driving him for a two, a four and a four in one over. Mailey had lost some of his terrors, and both men played him freely in front of the wicket Andrews relied on slow leg breaks, and it was off one of these that Hallows was easily stumped when the total was 116. He had driven powerfully and his leg play was good. Makepeace continued to hit freely and to place accurately. Iddon started bravely with a six off Andrews and a boundary off Everett. After that the scoring slowed down.. When he had made 23 Iddon had a life at the hands of Woodfull in the long field, who misjudged a lofty drive off Richardson. Two overs later Makepeace, in hitting against a break ball from Richardson, skied it and Ellis accepted an easy catch. Makepeace had batted 150 minutes. The total was then 163 for three wickets. Iddon continued to hit freely. Mainly by on drives he took a four, a two and a four off Richardson in one over. Green did most of the hitting after tea. He added 17 while his partner hit two singles. Green had made 13 when he hit a terrific straight drive, which Andrews gallantly attempted to catch, but was unable to hold. Some minutes later Iddon misjudged a ball from Ryder and was well taken at the wicket. In Ryder's next over Green touched a rising ball and was easily taken by Gregory at first slip. Sibbles and Duckworth repeated their previous day's effort and put on 24 runs by means of excellent driving. Then the latter played forward and gave Andrews an easy return. The score was thf-n ?£9 for nine wickets. The closing stages were farcical. The bowlers were clearly tired owing to long spells with the ball. It. was noticed that Grimmett was not used in this innings, while Mailey bowled only a few ov;;vs at the beginning. Sibbles and Tvldesley played out time. Details of the scores are:—
