CONCRETE HIGHWAY.
EXTENSION TO HELENSVILLE. j SUPPORT FOR THE PROJECT. RATEPAYERS FORM LEAGUE. . The extension of the concrete • highway, from Henderson to Helensville is the objective of the Auckland-Helensville Concrete Highway League, which was brought into being at a meeting of representatives of public and semi-public bodies between Henderson and Helensville, held at Kumeu on Saturday. The meeting was convened by the Kumeu Ratepayers' Association, and Mr. J. A., Lampden, of Kumeu, was elected chairman. A resolution affirming the principle of extending the concrete highway from Henderson to Helensville was carried unanimously, and the meeting, on the motion of Mr. J. Mackie, chairman of the Helensville Town Board, passed a resolution constituting itself the nucleus of the league. It was decided to form a committee, consisting of. one representative from each local body interested in the project, the following being elected:—Messrj. J. Mackie, W. E. Barnard (Helensville Chamber of Commerce), R. Hoe (Rewiti), T. F. Moore (Mototawa Domain Board), J. B. Copeland (Wai- | mauku Ratepayers' Association), N. W. Rimmer (Maraetai Ratepayers' Association), W. D. Leslie (Taupahi Ratepayers' Association), and J. A. Lampden (Kumeu). Local bodies at Waitakere, Pukeatua, Hobsonville and Whenuapai are to be invited to appoint a representative each on the committee. The committee was directed to draw up a constitution and enlist the support of the Waitemata County Council, through whose territory the greater part of the highway passes. The co-operation of the Auckland Automobile Association, the Auckland Chamber of Commerce, and the Auckland Rotary Club is also to be sought. There was some -discussion on the question oi the allocation of the cost of the road. Various opinions as to the ability of farmer ratepayers to contribute were expressed, some speakers suggesting that 20 per cent, of the cost would be a sufficient burden for the farmers, while other speakers said they were prepared to find up to 60 per cent. The committee elected Mr. Lampden as president, and Mr. G. T.. W. Green, of Huapai, as secretary pro tem. It was decided to hold committee meetings at : Kumeu and general meetings of the league it the . various centres.
