INFLUENZA ABATING.

POSITION IN CANTERBURY. SCHOOLS TO'! REOPEN TO-DAY, [ET TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] CHEISTCHURCH, Saturday. There seemed to be a general easing o'f the influenza outbreak to-day and it is expected that those with severe colds will have a favourable opportunity during the week-end to recover. On Monday all the public schools will -reopen and if the attendances' are sufficiently large they will remain open. ' ' There are seven notifications of pneumonic'' influenza arid one' of' fulminant' influenza to-day. At the last meeting' of the- Canterbury School Committees' Association it was decided io write tcj the Canterbury Education Board asking whether .children ,of school age could "be prohibited from,, attending the picture shows. Elftcher Telford," who. has r'epliifed staging that he, has not the power to close thp picture, shows or. prohibit. any public gathering.This power would have to'be vested in'him by-the Minister-of Health apd would not be done unless there was a serious epidemic. He doubted Whether the closing of the picture. shows would afford any; great protection from the disease as the children -tfould congregate in the open spaces in the daytime where ,tjie risk of infection would be just as great! OASES IN AUCKLAND. TWO DEATHS IN PROVINCE. "Two deaths from pneumonic influenza were reported at the Auckland health office on Saturday. One death occurred at Ngaruawahia, the other being a case in the Auckland Hospital already reported, which was admitted from Papakura. Since the beginning of the month there have been five deaths out of a total of 22 notifications.
