CITY HOUSING SCHEME.
SUCCESS IN CHRIST CHURCH.
CHEAPNESS AND COMFORT.
CONTENTMENT OF OWNERS. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] CHfiiSTCHURCH. Monday. No householders in Christchurch are more contented than those living in houses for which they are paying under the City Council's housing scheme —so it would appear from inquiries made at several of these residences to-day in the course of an inspection made by members oi the City Council and staff. The dwellings visited were built out of the council's first loan of £15,000. I wenty have been constructed out of this loan and the council is now arranging advances from the second half of the second loan of £jS,OOQ. Altogether 57. have been provided, ten are under way and anothei ten are to be built
The first house visited was in a pop.ilot», pari of Linwood. In this case £750 was advanced, tho contract price being £875. Mr. Batten, Municipal building inspector, explained that the council's inspectors go over the specifications in every case and supervise the erection This is done for tho council's security .inu in addition an annual inspection may fcn made. Tho people to whom the loans are made choose the section's. The houses are erected on any design. Ihe house inspected was panelled and plastered throughout and was a very comfortable dwelling.
A still more desirable property was seen in a new street in Linwood. The householder welcomed the chango from paying 21s a week for two rooms to 21s a week and the gradual purchase of a home. Tho cost of construction was within £l4 of the £750 advanced. In u street in Gromiey a similar amount was advanced and it was sufficient in this case to pay for concrote paths and fencing. The householder is paying less a week now than he was formerly for two
rooms. Expressions of gratitudo to the were met with at all the houses visited.
