AUSTRALIAN CRICKETERS.

THE HAMPSHIRE MATCH.

HOME TEAM AT THE WICKETS A FOLLOW ON NECESSARY. MAILEVS GOOD BOWLING. By Telegraph—Prccs Association—Copyright. A. and N.Z. LONDON, May 13. The match between the Australian cricketers and Hampshire was continued to-day. In reply to the Australians' first innings total oi 371, Hampshire compiled 152, and going in again had two wickets down for 167 when slumps were drawn. The attendance was 7000. A shower oi rain delayed Hampshire's opening. Then the fast bowlers, Gregory and Everett, began the attack against Brown and Newman. The first over produced 11 runs. Gregory was soon replaced by Macartney, who captured Brown's wicket in his first over. Mailey's first over of the tour yielded three singles and a wicket, Aird being taken at mid-on with the second ball. Mead was unlucky. He played his first ball from Everett on. to his foot and it rebounded on to the wicket. Runs Come Slowly, Everett bowled faster than hitherto, but he was played confidently. Macartney sent down an excellent variety of balls, getting pace from the pitch. Eventually he caught Kennedy guessing. Runs came slowly until Brutton twice sent Everett tc the boundary. He gave a difficult chance in slips, and then Mailey dropped him. Bowell showed nice, clean cutting and driving and he timed his strokes very accurately. ITc gave no chances and was in for 95 minutes. He hit four lours and was alway. confident. Livsey was splendidly caught low by Andrews at silly point. Australia's fielding was not up to the mark, the men being very slow in picking up the ball. Hampshire's innings lasted for 106 minutes, and the total was 152 runs. Following on, Hampshire showed a great recovery of form. Everett and Macartney were entrusted with the ball. The former maintained a good pace, but he was not dangerous. Brown had two narrow escapes from being run out. Improvement in Batting. The batsmen scored rapidly off Mailey and Everett. They knocked 12 off Mailey and then 11 off Everett, and 50 runs were compiled in half an hour. The scoring slackened with the appearance of Ryder, who kept a good length.

Newman's score included five fours, mostly on the leg side. Brown raised enthusiasm by driving Ryder' |pr four boundaries in two overs, sending up 100 in 75 minutes. When he was 58 he was dropped by Gregory at fine slip. Mead opened brightly, sending Mailey to the boundary, then leg glancing him for two, four and one. Both batsmen were set and played safely, Everett being severely punished. At this stage stumps were drawn. Details are:-r-AUSTRALIA. First Innings .. - . - • ■ ■ 371 HAMPSHIRE.—First Innings.
