HOW NOAH'S ARK ANIMALS ARE-MADE.
The wooden animals that we find in Noah's arks are made in a very curious -way. 'they are generally of beech and are no£ made individually, but in groups. First of all a piece of wood is turned on a lathe in a certain way so as to form a ring. Then the ring is sliced into sections of a regular size and each piece is a rough representation of the animal desired. The pieces are then handed over to other workers who, with sharp knives, finish -them into the required shapes,, forming heads, wings, or feet as the case may be. A few deft flourishes of the knife and the animal is ready for the pai'nter. Odd parts like the elephant's trunk, the sheep's projecting ears, and so on, are fashioned separately and attached to the body with a dab of glue. The ring is, of course, different for each particular animal, but the workers are very quick and skilful in turning these on the lathe.
