AGENT FOR BOOKMAKER.
WIFE OF TOBACCONIST.
FINE OF £25 IMPOSED. [BY telegraph.—PßESS ASSOCIATION-.] WELLINGTON. Friday. A rather unusual charge was brought against Stella Radcliffe, wife of a hairdresser in Molesworth Street, who was accused of keeping a common gaming house. According to the police evidence, she acted as agent for a prominent bookmaker, and admitted taking bets for 18 months to the extent of about £3O weekly. They had overhead her ringing up over the telephone to a wealthy bookmaker. Defendant's counsel said she only got a commission of a shilling in the pound, and her reason for doing it was her love of dress and her desire to get more money for it. Her husband did not countenance it, and would not pay her fine, nor even come into court.
Defendant was fined £25, in default one months' imprisonment.
