THE TIMBER INDUSTRY.
PERIOD OF DIFFICULTY. <{BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HAMILTON. Thursday. Reference to conditions obtaining in the timber industry was made by Mr. J. Bush, chairman of the Main Trunk Timber Trade Protection Guild, at a reception accorded by the sawmillcrs to Mr. H. Valder, at Hamilton yesterday. Mr. Bush said he had always held that the sawmillers, in order to do any good, should be associated.
They were ' now undoubtedly approaching a period of difficulty in the industry," he said. Not only did the conditions of the industry in New Zealard point to that, but the financial conditions of the country also indicated it, while the importation of foreign timber was having a serious effect on the market. During the past six months the industry had been faced with such importations, increased railway freights and a glutted market. This was a very grave position for the industry, said Mr. Bush, and as chairman of the guild he would do his best to hold things togetl;/ r.
