DRIVER ASLEEP AT WHEEL. PENALTY OF TEN POUNDS. ADVICE FROM THE BENCH.
" The car was stationary and this man was found asleep at the wheel," said SubInspector Lew in in the I'olico Court yesterday when Ernest Henry Burbidgo, aged 44, admitted being intoxicated whilo in charge of a motor-car. The sub-in-spector said that in consequence of information received a constable) visited Federal Street on Wednesday afternoon and found accused in the car. The Magistrate, Mr. Hunt: That is not •as bad as the case of a drunk man driving a car. On behalf of accused, Mr. Jasper Calder said that Burbidge used his car for business purposes and was a very steady man. He was one of the, first men to drive a car in the Dominion. He was married and had a child. He was prepared to take out a prohibition order against himself on the spot. " It a man takes too much drink be must not go near his car; he should take a taxi home," said the magistrate in fining accused £lO. " I will endorse his license, but will not cancel it.
