PAPAROA'S INTERESTS.

RIDING'S SOUND POSITION. COUNTY WORKS EXPENDITURE. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] PAPAROA, Wednesday. A meeting oi Paparoa ratepayers passed a hearty vote of appreciation of the work of the retiring member of the County Council, Mr. H. H. Sutherland, who is not seeking re-election. It was generally recognised that he has fought hard for the interests of the riding. The county clerk, Mr. E. G. Atkin, presented a statement showing a healthy condition in the finances of the riding and also the general county funds. The administration costs were low. The total general rates collected in the riding, including the hospital rate, was £717, and special loan repayment and interest, £239, made a total of £956. The amount collected was £944, representing 98.74 per cent. The expenditure out of general rates was: —Hospital Board levy, £107; proportion of road roller. £63; road works, £802; general expenses, £l3l. The Government grants were expended as follows: —Flood damage, Paparoa station road, £103; Arrell's bridge, £113; Ford bridge, £856; sundry roads, £2O. Ordinary expenditure under grants was:— Maungaturoto: Ruawai Road, free, £218; Pahi Road', £2 for £l, £470: Paparoa to station, free, £1417; Paparoa to Mareretu, free, £187; Slater's Bridge, £2 for £l, £430: total, £4BBB, not including administration. The expenditure for the whole county for the year ended March 31, not including administration, was £40,247, made lip as follows : —Hospital levy, £1759; machinery expenses, £1032; road roller, £1072; riding works, £11,049; thirds, £268; contractors' deposits, £357; wharves, £738; Government grants, £18,112; loans, £2096; interest and sinking fund on loans, £3764. The net administration and general expenses, including all salaries, amounted to £2155. The total receipts and payments for the whole county was £84.120 and the credit balance at March 31 was £4486 19s 9d.
