A MODERNISED "FAUST"
PRESENTATION IN BERLIN. CRITICS* UNFAVOURABLE VIEW. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Rocd. 8.5 p.m.) BERLIN. April 9. Following the production of " Hamlet " in modern dress in London a theatre in Berlin has presented Goethe's " Faust " on similar lines. Faust was robed as a university proctor and wore a dinner jacket. Mephistopheles waved an opera hat at the Widow Martha. Gretchen's home is a modern suburban villa. Critics consider that the tragedy of Gretchen presented in this manner, is robbed of its ethical foundation as it deals with problems of a definite historical period, nnlike " Hamlet," the subject matter of which is not aflected by time.
