RACE FROCKS AT ELLERSLIE

After provocative winds and doubtful skies, Saturday broke clear, bright and sunny. Pearly wisps of clouds chased iu the wake of azure and green, but no hint of heavenly tears cast a shadow on the hearts of holiday-seekers in the Queen City of the North. Most steps turned toward Ellerslie, where the Auckland Racing Club held its autumn meeting, and although midsummer is no more there was yet sufficient lovlincss to please tho most fastidious eye in colour and effect, for autumn, with her unfailing wand, had lightly brushed its way across and left its impress of gold and brown upon the scene. Along the borders facing the stands, crimson salvias burned richly behind the sturdy little clumps of golden zinnias. In the members' rooms, and 011 the stands, graceful hanging baskets of delicate ferns made an attractive picture, intermingling with bowls of autumn flowers. Many visitors explored the »jonservatories, and found delight in the exotic beauty of orchids, begonias and primulas, set amid a background of lycapodium and frail and feathery grasses. Colour burned richly, for oriflamme and orange, rose pinks arid lilacs charmed the eye. One could easily imagine a rainbow from the sky had melted and left its impress here. An orchid of exquisite fragility reared its delicate little face to the warmth ol the golden sun, and a flaming begonia, stained deeply with orange, smiled proudly opposite to greet the dainty beauty of a lavender primula. On the lawns the latest modes were to be seen, the favourite colourtones being chartreuse, verdigris and oriflamme. Rosebeige, well beloved of many, still held a conspicuous place with black and white to add tho note of dignity. Some lovely furs were worn, and many an ermine necklet made a rich and becoming finish to a striking toilette.
