PAGEANT OF YOUTH.

PRIMARY SCHOOLS SPORTS. CHAMPIONSHIPS DECIDED. OTAHUHU BOYS AND EPSOM GIRLS " A pageant of youth was witnessed at the Domain on Thursday afternoon when tiie Auckland Primary Schools Association's annual athletic sports meeting was held. Several thousands of children assembled to watch or compete in the numerous events and many were accompanied by their parents, who made the occasion a picnic outing. From the point of view of entries the meeting was without parallel so far as Auckland is concerned, anil was more than likely a record for New Zealand, ns over 10,000 eiftries were received from more than 4COO children. The marshalling of such a large field called for an exceptionally high degree of organisation and that this prevailed is indicated by the fact that heats were run off every 50 seconds and the programme was completed right on time When the competitions were at tlujir height the Domain was a wonderful sight. Children were everywhere—some lined up in readiness foi their events, others speeding across the green at tho crack of the starter's pistol, and many on the outskirts of the ground enjoying themselves as only children know how. It was a pageant of youth that could not fail to inspire. The drill, deportment walk and overhead ball competitions for girls were most spectacular. The two lirst-mentioned events were judged by Mr. H. Lotiawortli, director of physical training in the primary schools, "it was a great display, and we need have no fears for the future of the Dominion after seeing a gathering ol such bonny girls," Mr. J-iongworth said after making the awards. The Championship Shields. Forty-nine schools were represented in the competition.* for the championship shields and although rivalry was very keen the winning schools secured substantial leads in the aggregate. lhe iMvers Cup, for boys' events, was won by Otahuhu, arid the Epsom won the Champion Shield. 'I he winner of each final in the individual contests receives a medal and a certificate is awarded to the runners-up. In the teams events the school that produces the winning combination receives an enlarged photograph of the team :'.nu each member wins a copy. . '1 tie four representatives of the Glebe St. John Ambulance Brigade of the New South Wales Division, who will take part in the St. John Ambulance competitions to-day, were present, and gave first-aid in three instances, the most, serious case being that of a boy who dislocated Jus elbow.
