THE GREAT SOUTH ROAD.
Sir, —"While appreciating the letters on the -.subject of concrete on the Great South Road, I note that one very important feature, and one that should weigh very heavily as a determining factor in favour of a lasting and permanent highway, is the vital bearing that a concrete road must have upon the upkeep and maintenance of side roads. The Great South Road, having been declared a national highway by the Highways Board, means that this road has got to be maintained to a certain standard satisfactory to the Highways Board, so that, unless this road is put down in permanent and lasting material, it will, of conrse, continue to swallow up a very large proportion of the ratepayers' funds yearly, as has been the case in the past, leaving no money available for expenditure upon the side roads. This makes it an urgent necessity that the money should be voted to put down the Great South Road in concrete, as it is quite clear that there c<in never be any possible chance of getting anything done to our side roads until the problem of the Great South" Road is finally disposed of. Let us, therefore, insist upon this road being laid down in concrete without delay. Side Road Resident.
