TAKAPUNA AFFAIRS.

TWO PARK PROPOSALS. VALUABLE SCORIA SUPPLY. The Takapuna Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor, Mr. J. D. Morison, presiding. There wero also present Messrs. J. Collins, G. Creamer, F. E. N. Gaudin, C. F. Mackley, F. W. Suckling, J. W. Williamson and A. H. Wilkie. It was recommended by the Parks Committee that application be made to the Government f6r a grant of £2OOO toward the purchase of the scenic portion of Smith's Bush, Northcoto Road. The position was that the Government had agreed to find half an expenditure of £3OOO. It was agreed that a sub-com-mittee should report to the next meeting of the council as to ways and means. A report from the borough engineer upon the scoria taken from the scoria pit which the council lately at' a cost of £4250 showed tliat tests of- the material in the formation of concrete had proved highly satisfactory. The Mayor reported that the possession of such excellent material was going to reduce materially the cost of concrete works and enable the council's loan funds to go further. A recommendation of the Parks Committee that Sunday play on the Kitchener Park tennis courts be forbidden was adopted. Two permits were granted for the installation of petrol pumps, in both cases inside the applicants' premises. The town clerk reported thai it had been promised by officers of the Valuation Department thift the revaluation of the borough would be carried out in timo to be available for the rating of 1927-28. Warm compliments were paid to the town clerk, Mr. H. L. Bowden, uponn comprehensive report which ho submitted with regard to the finances of the borough, in advance of the last day of the financial year.

An offer was received from Mr. 11. C. E. Napier to sell the block at the lower end of Esmonde Road, comprising 18 sections, at £SOOO for park purposes. Consideration was deferred until the members of the council make their inspection tour of the district. The Takapuna Progressive Association wrote requesting that a public meeting of ratepayers be called in reference to the petition in favour of having the post office removed to a more suitable and central position than at present. It was resolved to convene such a meeting for April 20. Reconsideration was given, on the motion of the Mayor, to the resolution passed at the previous meeting for the construction of a 10ft. strip of concrete road round the lake on the opposite side of the road from the tram-raiL The purpose of the rescinding, which was agreed to, was to find a better position for the proposed strip, and the question was referred to the Mayor, the engineer and the chairman of the Streets and Works Committee and the Public Services Commiteo with power to act. ■ The resolution deferring the improvement of East Coast Road from Hherriff's Bridge to the borough boundary until the coming • year's estimates are being drawn up was also recalled.
