HARBOUR BRIDGE SCHEME

PRIME MINISTER'S OPINION. " TIME NOT OPPORTUNE." The proposal to construct a bridge over tho Waiternata to connect the northern districts with the city was advanced a stage last evening at a meeting of the Waiternata Bridge Committee, when a number of representative men wore added to that body. Tho Mayor of Birkenhead, Mr. E. G. Skeates, chairman of the committee, presided. Tho secretary, Mr. Arthur W. Marks, reported that 195 circulars had been sent out to prominent public men and local bodies. To thoso 102 replies had come to hand, and ho had made an analysis of these and the accompanying remarks. At least 35 were wholly favourable to tho project. Tho Hon. J. G. Coates, Prime Minister, replied specifically to the questions put, as follows: — Do you favour tho construction of a bridge across the Waiternata? —Yes, somo day. Do you agree that tho time is opportune ?—No. Will you support tho efforts of this or any committee, "or organisation, to further tho project ?—Not at present.
