AMERICAN COAL STRIKE.
LOSS OF £100,000,000.
REFERENCE TO ARBITRATION.
The loss to minors, owners and merchants through tho strike by the miners in the anthracite coalfields of America has boon estimated at £100.000,000. , The strike continued for nearly six months, and was finally settled by an agreement to accept arbitration.
Present wages are to bo continued under a new contract lasting for five years, but the subject may bo reconsidered from year to year and the final award, should direct negotiations fail, is to bo left to a committer of three. These are to bo chosen in a rather novel manner, as follows: From three disinterested persons chosen by the miners, the operators are to select one; from three such persons selected by the operators, the miners to select one ; "these two are to select a" third, and a decision of a majority of these three shall bo observed. Various matters of dispute other than wages are to be arranged on a basis of compromise.
