NAVY LEAGUE BALL.

A BRILLIANT FUNCTION

UNDER VICE-REGAL PATRONAGE

VISITING OFFICERS AS GUESTS

The president and members of tho Auckland branch of the Navy League held a ball in the Town Hall last evening, in honour of the officers of the Australian cruisers. It was a brilliant function. Their Excellencies (he Governor* Genera! and Ladv Alice Fergusson, with a party from Government House, wero* present.

The decorations were lavishly carried out, and the effect as one entered tho hall was magnificent. Festoons of lycopodium stretched from the roof to tlio sides ot the hall, umbrella shape, white electric lights swung like stars in a sky of green, and beneath the radiance the many lovely frocks and the uniforms-of the officers made a most spectacular scene. The stage, was arranged as a lounge, cosy seats intermingling with exotic fernery and nikau palms. It was as though a fairy's wand had transplanted one into a corner of A ready. Soft strains of music filled the/air, and on the floor human butterflies flitted in and out, the, gold of epaulets striking a dashing note in the moving picture. Some of tho most beautiful frocks were those fashioned from diaphanous mater-* ials. Light as swansdown, delicate as gossamer thread, they were charmingly thrown up by tho subdued lighting. So many guests chose noutral tints, others lit up the picture in vivid tones of vermilion and oriflarnmo. while flitting glimpses of Biskra and verdigris were conspicuous against the subdued and lovely delicacy of dawn and oak apple. A few wore shades of, tangerine and orange,'but not many of the guests wore white, but an occasional glimpso o'C a black and wliilo toilette made a striking and dignified note in the happy scene.
