VICTORIA CRUISING CLUB. ANNUAL REGATTA RESULTS. SOME CLOSE FINISHES. The Victoria Cruising Club held its annual regatta on Saturday. The weather. Was ideal fcr yachting, a wholesail breeze from the south-west prevailing throughout the afternoon. All! the races started and finished off the dredge Maui, mdored in St. Mary's Bay. Large entries were received and some' very close finishes were recorded, especially in the race for class H., in which Twilight and Mona tied lor first place on corrected times. The officials in charge of the racing were:—Starter. Mr. W. Utting; judge, Mr. E. Griffiths: timekeepers, Messrs. O. Johnson and J. McGehan. The details are as follows: MARIE L. WDS'S LAUNCH RACE,. The race for launches brought out 10 competitors, which were' sent away to a good start at 2.23 p.m. Marie L. crossed the .line first and was closely followed by Romance 11.. Methinia. Viveen and Gwen L., with the others handy, except Wairete and Muzzletov, which were both late. Romanco 11. soon went into the lead. Viveen passed Methinia, but could not o\ erhaul Maria L., and before the top murk was reached Methinia also had to give place to Esther G., Namoi and Gwen L. The finishing times wereßomance 11. (255.), 2h 44m 7s; Marie L. (8m 30s), ill 50m 8s; Viveen (7m 30s), 2h 50m Sis: Esther G ,(10m 303), ih S4m 13s; Namoi (9m), 2h 56m 18s; Gwen L. (9m 30s). 2h 58m 13s: Methinia (13m), 3h 2m 0s: Wairete (8m 455), 3h 2m 6s; Swiftsure (14m), 3h 3m 525: Muzzletov (17m). 8h 17m 3s. Result:—Marie L., 1; Viveen, 2; Romance n " 3 " THE KEEL YACHTS. Of the competitors in the race for keel yachts Valdora was first away, _ and next came Queenie, Wanderer, Wainki and Cooee, in that order. Little Jim was 5m 50s late. Queenie was first to set a small leader as a spinnaker, and she soon overhauled Valdora. A little later Wairiki and the others made use of their light sails. Little Jim gradually made up for lost time and when she got up with the leaders a very interesting race was fought out between them. Queenie. held the advantage, followed by Wairiki, Little_ Jirn and Cooee. All were within easy distance of one another and just after the Western tide deflector was reached on the close haul up the harbour. Little Jim headed Wairiki, Passing the flagship a few minutes later the times were:—Queenie, 4h 8m 20s; Little Jim. 4h 10m 325; Wairiki, 4h 10m 345: Cooee, 4h 10m 50s; Valdora was some distance further awav, while Wanderer .retired on reaching the Western Wharf. The finishing times were:—Queenie (6m), 4h 22m 545; Little Jim (scr). 4h 24m 7s: Wairiki (6m), 4h 24m 455; Cooee (14m), 4h 25m 20s; Valdora (I8im), 4h 39m SsSb. Result: — Cooee. 1; Queenie, 2;' Wairiki, 3. A DEAD HEAT. Si* boats started in the race for class H. Starlight was first over the line, and once in the lead Bhe was never headed. Spray followed and then came Twilight and Why Not in that order. Mana and Awatere were both over 4m late. The finishing times were:—Starlight (scr), 4h 32m lis; Spray (7m), 4h 39m 6fl; Awatere (8m), 4h 44m 38s; Mona (17m). 4h '46 m 9s; Twilight (19m), 4h 48m 9s; Why Not (20m), 5h lm 275. Result; Mona and Twilight, dead heat for first. Spray, 3. LOUISA'S FIRST WIN. • Ngaru 11. led the way over the line in the race for class L and in close order came .Rakoa, Kolrin, Valeria, Otira, Louisa, Mowai and Rahiri. Ngaru 11. and Otira made a close race of it round the course. Ngaru 11. had the advantage and finally beat Otira "in'' by six seconds. The finishing times were:—Ngaru 11. (6}m), 4h 52m 13s; Otira (4m). 4h 52m 19s; Kokiri (sm), 4h 53m 475; Rakoa (61m), 4h 57m 345; Louisa (18m), 4h 59m 3s; Mowai (6m), 5h 8m 235. Result: Louisa, 1; Ngaru 11., 2; Otira, 3. Valeria and Rahiri did not finish. TEE 20-FOOTERS. Class N ' was represented in the 20-fobt class by Wairere, Ngawa, Waiapu, laabelle, Winifred and Nsjaro, the boats crossing the line in the order named. Winifred was first to set her spinnaker and she drew up with the leaders. Isabelle, however, had a day to her liking and she headed the scratch boat and also Wairere. Going up the, harbour Isabelle had a nice lend from Wairere, but she threw away her chance of winning by rounding the Roim buoy on the wrong hand and having to make it the second time. Meanwhile, Wairere passed Isabelle and led to tho finish, which was timed as follows;—Wairere (2m), 5h 10m 355; Isabelle (7m), 5h l'Lm 265; Waiapu (13m), 5h 16m ss; Ngaro (9m), Bh 18m 275; Ngawa (11m), 5b 2ilm 475. Result: Waiapu, 1; Isabelle, 2; Wairere, 3. Winifred did not finish. THE SMALLER CLASSES. The start of the race for class S was the best of the day, eleven boats crossing the line within a few seconds of one another. Mascotte was first to show otit and then came Namu, Aratu," Sea Sleigh, Atangatai, Muru and Swiftsure. It was a beat to the Watchman mark and Sea (Sleigh went into the lead. On getting round spinnakers were set for the run to the .Shoal Bay buoy atd just before reaching it Namu passed Sea Sleigh. Lancia was third round and Aratu fourth. On the beat across the harbour Lancia passed both Sea Sleigh and Aratu. Passing the flagship on the complefition of i the first round the times were:—Namm lih 51m 85s; Lancia, 3h 52m 455; Sea Sleifth, 3h 52m 475; Aratu. -3h 53m 40s; Torea. Bh 55m 2s; Mascotte, 3h 55m 41s; Muru, 3h s'Jctn 30s; Atangatai, 8h 56m 51s; Swiftsure, «!h sm; Verona, 4h 5m 10s; Almira, 4h 8m 2>s, Rival reported that she had fouled a. beacon and retired. The finishing times Were: Namu (scr), 4h 34nk 575; Set Sleigh (4m), 4h 36m 345; Atangatai (3m), 4h 38:u Is; Mascotte (4m), 4h 39m 345; Lsyisia (8m), 4h 41m 10s; Torea (9m), 4h 41m 42b; Aratu (scr), 4h -42 m 565; Muru (4m), 4h 42m 575; Verona (12m), 4h 53m 41s; Almira (12m). 4h 69m 10 s. Result: Sea Sleigh, 1; Torea, 2; Namu. 3. .:/.. There were eight competitors in the race for class Y, which were led over the line by Nautilus, Sea Gnome. Cupid and_ Alert being handy. Alert did well on the wind and she opened up a nice lead from Cupid, Sea Gnome, and Nautilus. Sea Toler fouled the: pile beacon ofi St. Mary's Bay and retired. The finishing times were: Aiert (scr), 4h, 40m 365; Sea Gnome dm), 4h 46m 425; Nautilus (2m), 4h 49m 20s; Sea Elf (7m), 4h 51m 255; Sea Breeise (sm). 4h 51m 365. Result: Alert, 1; 8e& Elf. 2; Sea Gnome, 3. Cupid and Sunbeam did not finish. A WIN FOR MARIE. In the race - for class T, Meteor got the best of the stc«t, crossing the line just ahead of Ednji, Misjiah, and Marie. Meteor and Marie raade a good race' in the first round, but in the-second Marie drew further away from Meteor, which also had to give, place to Ngaio. finishing times Were: Marie (scr), 5h 8m 255: 'Ngaio (2m), 5h 14m 13s; Meteor (51m), 5h 14m 19s; Mispah (41m), 5h 14m 365; Kismet dm), 5h 17m 365; Edna; (6m), 5h 18m 40s. Result; Marie, 1; Meteor, 2; Mispah, t. _ A GOOD START, A good start was effected in the race for class V, Leveret .crossing the line first, closely: followed by Secret. Drone, Wild Wave, Sur--prise and Belle in that order. Surprise went into the lead early in the race and. held the upper hand throughout.:. Result: Surprise, 1; Wild Wave, 2; Leveret. 3. Secret did not finish. THE BURNS CUP. Rona and Joan were the only represents,trves of the Jellicoe class and the race m this class was declared oS. As Rona had put in a challenge for the Burns Cup, however, she was allowed to sail over the. course and in company with Joan she was sent away at 3.30 p.m. Rona had a lead of lm 9s from Joan on the completion of the first round, and in the second Joan carried away a halyard and retired, leaving Rona to finish by herself. She thus wins the cup. No race was held for class M on account of the boats taking part in the squadron's event for 18-foot patikia. , , „ The annual picnic tendered by the club to its vice-presidents was held at Pine Island yesterday.
