WATERSIDERS' WAGES.

AN INCREASE ANNOUNCED.

PAYMENT RETROSPECTIVE.

SATURDAY WORK IF NEEDED. EXTENSION OF PRESENT AWARD. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] WELLINGTON, Tuesday. Following upon the recent pronouncement of the Arbitration Court in regard to the basic wage, conferences have been held between representatives of the New Zealand Waterside Workers' Federation and the waterside employers, and it has been agreed that the award is to be extended for a further six months so that it will not now expire until June 30, 1927. In view also of the Court's decision that waterside workers are entitled to 25 per cent, additional owing to the casual nature of their employment an increase of ljd per hour on. the basic or general cargo rate has been agreed upon, subject to waterside work being carried on at all ports in a satisfactory manner and, in particular, that work, if required, is to be carried on on Saturday afternoons.

The increased rate is payable as from November 1 last.

LYTTELTON STANDS OUT.

NO INCREASE GRANTED. DETAILS OF THE NEW RATES, [BY telegraph.—press association.] WELLINGTON, Tuesday. The new basic wage for watersiders as a result of the agreement now reached will be 2s 4d an hour ordinary time, 3a 6d ordinary overtime, and 4s 8d special overtime. There is no increase in the basic slag, guano, or phosphate rate. The back pay will be made np in due course. Copies of the new agreement will be available in a few days. It is understood that the pinpricking policy, "go-slow," etc., are to cease and that a period of steady work is in prospect. Owing to Lyttelton not agreeing to work on Saturday afternoon, this agreement is not a Dominion one. It is understood that no increase has been granted to the Lyttelton waterside workers.
