TWO MEN AND MOTOR-CAR. KARANGAHAPE ROAD INCIDENT. ATTEMPTED CONVERSION DENIED Charges of- attempting to convert to their use a motorcar valued at £3OO were denied in the Police Court yesterday by "William Henry Thompson, eged 36, and Henry Johnson, aged 26. Mr. j. W. Poynton, S.M., was on the Bench. Constable Crane said he saw the two accused in Karungahapa Road, near the top of Queen Street, on Monday afternoon. One was sitting at the wheel of the car and the other was trying to turn the cranking-handle. .After watching them for some time he' found they were both under the influence of liquor and he proceeded to arrest" them. He managed to secure Thompson, but the other man made oft* and was chased by some pedestrians. Constable Smith said that as a result:, of a complaint he went to Myers Park later in the afternoon and found Johnson sitting under a tree, still somewhat confused by liquor. In a written statement, he said he was a bus driver. He did not remember anything of the alleged offence. At this stage Thompson asked for an adjournment in order to consult a solicitor. He said he was standing near the car, but did not touch it. The two accused were remanded until this morning. " A BREACH OF TRUST." He will be placed on probation for three years and ordered to repay £6O, the extent of the damage and expenses.
