NEW STREET NAMES.

OBJECTION BY RESIDENTS. A MOUNT EDEN PETITION. FURTHER CHANGES PROPOSED. A petition bearing 45 signatures was presented to the Mount Eden Borough Council last evening protesting against the action oi the council in changing the name of East Avenue to Nicholson Avenue. The petitioners asked that the old name be restored. Mr. S. New comb, who presented the petition, said it was fully appreciated that honour was due to Mr. O. Nicholson for his generosity and his services to the borough, but his name was already perpetuated in Nicholson Park. The residents of the road, while shrinking from doing anything that would detract from thai honour, were uEammous in holding that the council had made a mismiie. i'ne petition was signed by 45 ratepayers and residents of the street. Only one res-dent of the street had not signed, and he was out of Auckland. The Mayor, Mr. E. H. Potter, said the council's action Lad nothing to do with Mr. Nicholson. East Avenue was the approach to the recently-formed Nicholson Park, and it; was desired that the road should indicate in some manner the neighbourhood of the reserve. Mr. Newcomb: Weil, when all the residents in the read object to the cnange I think their views should receive some weight. It has been East Avenue ever since it was a road. The Mayor said the road. 100 ft wide, at present passing through Nicholson Park, was named Nicholson Road. East Avenue was a continuation of it and should bear the same name. It was intended that this road should connect w;<th the new training college and eventually might continue through to Epsom Avenue.

It was not the first time ice cooaej! had met with opposition from people who objected to the changing of a name, scac-o Mr. Potter. When Mount Boskd! Rosd was changed to Bonumoa Rose pecpie had objected and the same- thing bad occurred when Balmoral Bead was named. It wa.s the intention of the eoanen to alter Bounuarv Beau to B,a,j.. He had no donbt there weald he opposition to tha". also, hnt- the name was a misnomer and it was more natural to cah it hv the name it already bore furtner to the east. He moved that jnrtner consideration of the petition be deferred mini the next meeting. The motion was carried.
