SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT.

THE AUCKLAND DISTRICT. SEVERAL SCHEMES DEFERRED. Shortage of funds has caused the Education Department to defer several schemes for remodelling Auckland among these being the Mount Albert and Mount Eden schools. Advice was received by the Auckland Education Board yesterday that the proposal for remodelling Mount Albert school must be modified, and, that in any case, the matter would have to be deferred, as at the present time funds were insufficient to provide for more urgent cases. The proposal would receive further consideration, however, when the board submitted its list of urgent cases for remodelling and rebuilding.

With regard to Mount Eden, it was considered inadvisable to do anything at the present time, as the Brixton Road school would afford relief, and the position would probably be still further improved by the erection of the new normal school. The suggestion was made that the board did consider the question of providing temporary buildings. An application for a grant for improvements to the new Parnell school site was also deferred on the ground that no funds would be' available during the current financial year. Meantime, a fairly long list of works for which grants have been approved, but for which tenders have not yet been accepted, is claiming the attention of the board. This includes additions to Avondale, Otahuhu, Papatoetoe, Northcote and Dargaville schools, a new Normal School, and outbuildings at Edendale. Amended application is to be made for school additions at Huntly. Further grants have been notified by the department as follows£3oo toward cost of remodelling the Northcote school building; Meadowbank, building for auxiliary school purposes; Mokai, temporary school building. On the recommendation of the advisory inspector, application is to bo made to the department for a grant for erection of an additional class room at Point Chevalier school.
