A LAND OF PLENTY.
VISITOR ON NEW ZEALAND. A recent visitor to New Zealand, Mr. John D. Cobbold, of Ipswich, has been lecturing in Ipswich on New Zealand and its attractions. He described New Zealand as a. brighter England, which, offered opportunities to those who are young and virile enough to take up' a new life overseas, "Once they set sail settle there," he said, "they will persuade others to follow; and there is ample room in New Zealand for all who are prepared to go out and work. Long experience of the country shows that they will, there grow in size, stature, and wealth." To this bright prospect he made one jocular limitation by desecribing Dunedin*gs. so bang full of Scotsmen that he did not suppose any one from Suffolk wolld have much chance of getting on there. Turning to the industries of New Zealand, Mr. Cobbold dealt first with agriculture, and bemoaned the absence of Red Poll cattle from the islands. He said he to persuade those whom he met that Suffolk produced by far thfbest breeds of cattle and sheep, and he hoped that the words spoken by him might ultimately lead to the introduction of those breeds to New Zealand.
In conclusion, Mr. Cobbold spoke of the facilities offered by the New Zealand Government to those who desired to emigrate to a land of plenty, in which only labour is scarce, but added that the country was for the worker, and not a paradise for those who were without the will or the inclination to give of their best service. Young girls could be sure of employment on arrival, and they'would probably find themselves engaged to be married on the voyage out. Mr. H. T. B. Drew, of the High Commissioner's office, lectured in Belfast and other centres in Northern Ireland in October and November, describing the conditions in New Zealand and the inducements offered to immigrants.
