AMATEUR SEAMEN.
• PAPARDA'S LONG TRIP. / FARMERS AND ITALIANS. LONDON, Jan. 10. 1 The steamer Paparoa arrived in the Thames after a voyage from Australia which occupied two months, instead of 48 days. The Paparoa left Townsville with a scratch crew consisting of several young farmers and a number of Italians, who had finished sugar-cutting, but the crew was still men short. The only original member of the crew was the boatswain.
The vessel travelled via Batavia, and encountered Toad weather. One after another the crew went down with seasickness, which involved heavy work for the officers. Frequently half of the crew was confined to their bunks. The engineers- assisted in stoking and greasing. The farmers behaved gallantly in the stokehold. Officers painted the ship, while the chief 'steward acted, as butcher and cook.
