February 18—Wanganui Cup, ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS. •' Wager."—Musketoon carried 7.121 when he won the Takapuna Cup in 1924. n.R.M.—Karo (7.13) was credited with winning the Auckland Cup of 1919 by four lengths. Uncle Ned (8.8) ran second. " Inquirer," To Kuiti.—Mersoy (by Knowsloy) was foaled in 1874, and she produced Carbine in 1885. Light (by Eager) was foaled in 1907 and produced Gloaming in 1915. NOTES BY PHAETON. It is computed that 50 horses have been imported to Australia from England during the past six months. Surveyor won the Wellington Cud last year under 8.8. Tho veteran has this year been let off with 8.2 in the big race at Tremtham. The Kilbroney gelding Happy Warrior, who v/as recently re'egated to a place with tho hurdlers, registered a win in his first ruco ovor tho battens. All continuing to go well with Rapine. Star Strangor and Joy Ride, tho trio may bo found carrying Mr. A. B. Williams' colours at Randwick nest April. Tho respective meetings, comprising: the Bay of Plenty Circuit, will be brought off in tho following order:—Opotiki. March 10: Whakatane March 17: To Puke, (date to be fixed); Tauranga. March 20. Tho Auckland-owned gelding Tall Timber figures among tho entrants for tho two leading events set down for decision at the Foxton Racing Club's meeting, which takes placo on January 22 and 23. News to hand from Wondville states that the tasks exacted from Nigger Minstrel continue to bo of the lightest character, and that nothing further will be exacted from Desert Gold's brother so long as hard ground is a feature. Matters shape well for tho complete success of the- Thames Jockey Club's mooting, to bo held at Takapuna on Thursday a:ud Saturday, next. Acceptances for events not down for decision on tho first day fell due yesterday, and with 89 horses still engaged that should furnish ample material for an Interesting day's sport. Tho Wellington handicapper. Mr. II Coylc. is apparently in accord witb those wno consider that Tamatete has seen his host day so far as six-furlong races are concerned, for in casting the weights for l;ha Telegraph Handicap, set down for decision at Trentham on tho 20th inat., he awarded the Absurd gelding 8.6—251b below tho topweight (Reremoana). With a big exhibition on at Dunodin an extension of tbo ordinary days' racing could reasonably bo asked for. and. moat people would say. could legitimately be conceded There reems to bo an impression, however, that tho Dunedin Jockey Club'B request for an extra permit for the extension of the autumn meeting, fixed to bo held next month, from two to three days has not been acceded to. The Takapuna Jockey Club received a capital list of nominations for their approaching summer meeting, the 16 events which form tho programme attracting 362 entries. The Takapuna Cup. which carries a Snoney prize of £I3OO. and a gold cup of tho value of £IOO, has 14 horses engaged. Tho hurdle events and the races sot apart for the two-year-olda have attracted good nominations, and everything points to a successful meeting. Sleet, the three-year-old daughter of Kilbroney and Snowlike, who won a double at the Marton Jockey Club's meeting last week, is credited with being the possessor of a good dash of pace. If as good as she is represented to be, Sleet may have something to jiay in the settlement of tho Telegraph Handicap at Trentham, in which race she has been awarded the handy impost of 7.3. To Mohanui. who has succeeded in placing himself well in tho limelight thi3 season, it i 3 interesting to note, V/as ftot called upon to raco until ho had reaohed thft ago of four years, and ho has therefore only contested 27 races to date. To Monanui's rocord stands as follows: UnFirst, Second. Third, placed At 4yra . . 1 2 0 12 At syrs .. 5 22 8 6 4 2 15 New South Wales is credited with possesting a very brilliant throe-year-old filly in Valicare, a daughter of Valais, who has Tegiitered three successive victories, and who holds an unbeaten certificate. Valicare was purchased as a yearling for 1700 guineas. VftJicaro's dam, Couranto, is by Malstor from Croßs Step (a daughter of Stepniak) and full sister to Cross Battery, dam of the Melbourne Cup winner, Artilleryman. One of the most attractive looking fillies submitted to auction at tho recent sale held at Ellerslio was Cione, a yearling half-sister (by Catmint) to tho Avondalo Stakes winner Phaola. The bidding, however, only went to 200 guineas, and sho was passed in. Mr. A. B. Williams subsequently effected the purchaaa of tho filly from Dr. Milsom and that, of course, means sho will bo advantageously placed to distinguish herself.

Tbe> passing of the top hit would probably bo termed a more appropriate topic for thfc cr&aa and faishion column than one devoted to racing. Nevertheless I am tempted to refer to the pronounced disappearance ol what was once described by a great Englishman a.i " the insignia of respectability." In viewing the sceno at Ellersiie on New Year's Day many thoughts came upward aa I aat turning over the tablets of memory, and with vivid recollections of tho past, I found wiyaelf endeavouring to find a man ,in the main enclosure wearing a top hat, which was so prominent a feature of Head wear on the lawn in the old days. I failed to sight a single one. What a chango from the old time! Henry .Redwood, still affectionately remembered as the father of tho New Zealand turf, always wore, a top hat. as did also his close friend, William Walters; and Colonel Eraser, Captain Beck hum, James Watt, Robert Graham, John Sangatar McEarlano, Henry Hardington .r.mies McCosh Clark, Joseph Banks. Joseph Bennett, and Alfred Isaacs were also counted as strong champions of the belllopper. Samuel Morrin, though tall of stature, never looked bo well, I used to think, hs when he put on th* top hat and wore the green coat of the Pakuranga Hunt Club on fc race day. Then there waeJolm Kirkwood—to have found him in anything but a top hat would have been auite a surprise packet William Percival. who was the first A.B.C. secretary, and who continued to net for an extended period in that capacity, was on© "of tho staunchest supporters of th* tall hat, and so were Joseph Howard and Edward Woolfield. And the bookmakers—they furnished in themselves quite a strong tall-hat contingent, and the he ad.wear invariably carried the stamp of first quality. Alfred Drake, George Belch'r, William Weston, John Gartuner, John Harris, and Edward Roper, -who the principal men layinc th<s odds in tho old days, all stood out prominently in r-ttractive headgear on race days, and some of their number held the book and pencil in gloved hands Our racecourses hiwe wit* hensed many changes, and tho disappearance of the top hat, it would seem, is to be regarded as permanent. But fashion, like other things, has its per'od of eccentricities, and tho old order' of the silken hat may come back some day, even to the racecourse.

Included among tho yearlings at tho present stage is a full-brother to tho Great Northern Derby winner. Star Stranger (by Martian— Star L«dy). The youngster in question is to join his brother in Mr. A. B. team, and a notification in the official calendar states that a contingency has been registered between tho breeder, Mr A. J. Toxward. and Mr. Williams, which extends to 1928. and which covers the colli till the end of his four-year-old career. Early in the present season an opinion waß expressed that Desert Gold's three-year-old daughter Oroum might bo expected to lose her maidenhood " before long." Oreum,, however, has yet to accomplish the same, and sho is still engaged in hack company. Oreum (7.5) fia-ures in the Ruapehu Handicap, to be run at Trentham on the opening day of the Wellington Racing Club's Summer MeetinE on January 20, and it will be interesting to note whether she succeeds in interrupting the scries of defeats cnterod against her name when she makes a reappearance on the scene. Ngata must bo given credit for running with marked consistency this summer. In the decision of the Manawatu Cun he carried 8.11 into third place behind Clarinda (7.12j and Enthusiasm (8.11), nnd on the second day he won the President's Handicap under 8.13. In tho decision of the Marton Cup carried 9.0 into third, place behind Grand Knight (8.1) nnd Eilceit (7.13), and on the following day he won the Aldwon-th Stakes under 9.4. According t<t_ the -Turf Hogister. Ngata ranked as a six-year-old when he won tho Wanganui Cup and Century Hurdle Race in the season of 1921-22. If tho record in regard to Nsata's age given above is correct, he is rising 10 years old, and it can be said that he is wearing well. Further than expressing an opinion that Tho Hawk will again be raced in Australia during tho coming autumn, his owner, Mr. J. M. Cameron, has apparently no set planb for tho Martian gelding. An important race in which The Hawk has played a strong j part in tho two preceding seasons is the I Caulfield Futurity Stakes, which he won m 1924. and last year he was only separated j by a neck from the winner: and Mr. Cameron mav givo his horso an opportunity of earning further distinction. Should he elect to do so. the subscription of a late entry will bo £SO, whilo i'3o is the amount of tho forfeit. Tho declaration of the woights for tho Wellington Cup provides an interesting problem for students of racing on which to engage their thoughts. Count Cavour [ muHt bo accounted to have earned the 9.6 opposite his name, and the same remarK can be applied to To Monanui (9.1). The English-bred pair, Grand Knight (8.8) and Royal Divorce (8.7), are not overburdened, and tho veteran Surveyor (8.2) must bo accounted to have a chance if he survives a strong preparation. In awarding Star Stranger 7.11 (3lb below weight-for-age) Mr Coylo has net dealt harshly with the son of Martian for his Great Northern Derby victory. Of the light-weights. Gala Day i 7.1) 13 one that is sure of a good following in Auckland at least. ENGLISH-BRED RACEHORSE. BOUGHT FOR NEW ZEALAND. [from our own correspondent.] LONDON, Dec. 1. Mr. J. B. Reid has recently purchased Diacquenod from the Aga Khan. Thi3 is a chestnut colt by Diadumonos out of Miss Cobalt. He was purchased as a yearling at the Doncaster September saleß by the Aga Khan for 2000 guineas. As a two-year-old he ran on six occasions, but his oaly success was in the International Two-Year-Old Stakes at Kempton Park, when he beat Warden of the Marches. Jovial Monk and three others. TVub year he won the Chioveley Handicap at Nowbury from a good class field of sprinters, and also the Londesborough Plate at York from his stable companion, Juldi, with Blue Pete (third in tho Cambridgeshire. and Donzelbn. winner of the Liverpool Cup) further in the rear. Diacquenod js being shipped to New Zea-"t land by the National Mortgage and Agency Company, and will go out by the Riiahine. The new owner of Diacquenod is Mr. J. F. j Buchanan, of Little River. | TAKAPUNA JOCKEY CLUB. SUMMER NOMINATIONS.
