THE GOSPEL OF THRIFT.
SUCCESS DF Y.W.C.A. CLUB. HELPING GIRLS TO SAVE. Of all the good work being done in the interests of working girls in Auckland not the least is that being achieved by the Y.W.C.A. • Thrift Club. The club broadcasts a great economic lesson: it teaches young working girls the wisdom of putting a little money away for a "rainy day." Although it has been in existence for only a few years the Thrift Club is_ now on a sound footing and is a boon to hundreds of girls. Membership is confined almost entirely to girls employed in business houses such as manufacturing organisations. To givo some idea of tho size of the club, the girls in 26 business houses are members. To each of the girls in these places the Y.W.C.A. supplies a card. Each house chooses a collector who receives weekly from the girls the money they may have to spare. Payments are credited on the cards and the money is taken to tho Y.W.C.A., where the amounts given by depositors are entered up in a ledger. The money is then transferred to the Savings Bank where it is placed in a special account. Any depositor may withdraw money providing she gives the secretary of the club three days notice. In the past it has been the practice of tho club to draw all money out .of the bank at Christmas and hand the girls their savings with the accrued interest. At the request of tho members, however, the money in future will remain in the bank until such time as the depositors wish to withdraw it. The amount of the deposits increase every month, tho sum deposited by each girl generally ranging from 2s 6d to 10s. For the period from fast March to the end of November tho total amount deposited was £3635.
