BOARDING HOUSE ASSAULT.
HUSBAND AND WIFE FINED. TURNED AWAY FROM PREMISES. An episode at n, Vincent Street boarding houso resulted in the appearance of Elizabeth. Jane Gosling and her husband, John William Gosling, in the Police Court yesterday charged 'With assault, Mrs. Gosling would not plead. Her husband denied the charge.
The proprietor of the boarding house Ba:<i both the accused came to the house shortly before nine o'clock on Wednesday evening. They behaved in a peculiar manner and he refused to allow them in. Thereupon Mrs. Gosling struck his wife in the face while her husband knocked witness over. " Yenterday morning Mrs. Gosling came to the boarding house and paid a 10s deposit on a room," said the proprietor s wife. " Accompanied by her husband she returned in the evening. I was of the opinion that she had been drinking and refused to let her ill. When I went to return tho deposit she struck me twice on the cheek. Her husband struck my husband." Constable McCallum 'said .-he was called to the boarding house at nino o'clock. Gosling denied having assaulted the proprietor,, although the latter's face was bleeding. Mrs. Gosling admitted striking the proprietor's wife, saying she "got all she deserved." Gosling said ho had been to the hospital for treatment of his hand on Wednesday. The proprietress would not let Mrs. Gosling into tho boarding house. She said Mrs. Gosling had been drinking, but there was no one who could say the latter drank. Mrs Gosling, interrupting: Alcoholic liquor you mean, Jack. I drank a bucket of water yesterday. (Laughter). Gosling: Keep quiet. " My wife was very excitable," added Gosling. "It was late at night and a bad time to bo turned away from a boarding house." Mrs. Gosling again interjected. The Magistrate, Mr. Poynton: Be quiet. I want to hear one story. The accused were each fined £2, in default, seven days' imprisonment. If paid, half the amount of the fines is to go to tb? persons assaulted. As he left the dock Gosling said he jvould serve tho default.
