TO-DAY'S ILLUSTRATIONS. WEALTH OF TOPICAL ITEMS. An extremely interesting selection of up-to-date photographic subjects is published in the large pictorial section of the Auckland Weekly News, on sale to-day. While important current events predominate, there is a proportion of beautiful scenic plates, the whole combining to make a production of outstanding merit. Of "particular interest is the centre j double page illustrating a recent visit to White Island, that mysterious volcanic cone which rises from the sea in tho Bay of Plenty. The photographs, which wore secured by a special staff photographer, portray vividly this wcfii'd outpost where the sulphur workings are being operated again for the first time since the violent eruption of 1914. Outstanding events of the .sporting world are well covered. A page is devoted to the New Zealand lawn tennis championships in Christchurch, and there are some remarkably fine snapshots of tho Auckland racing carnival, bo|h at Ellerslie and Epsom. The great attraction of the seaside during the holidays also provides excellent pictures. Beach galas at Wanganui and Wellington, happy picnic Earties at New Plymouth, Waihi Beach, lenlieim and on the Wanganui River, and Napier's Mardi Gras carnival, will appeal strongly to all. A very line page illustrating life on one of New Zealand's largest cattle stations, shows scenes at' mustering time on (the White Rock property near Cape Palliser, when nearly five thousand beasts were yarded for branding. Social work of the Y.W.C.A. in Auckland makes another bright page. The pictures were taken at the Blockhouse Bay holiday home, where business girls are provided with a cheap and health-giving vacation and have a very happy time. Many further ' highly interesting subjects include six New Zealanders mentioned in tho New Year honours list; holiday motoring in the Hokianga district; summer cruising in Hauraki Gulf; sport on the cattle station; marketing the wool clip under Jifficulties at Mahia Peninsula; a New Zealand travelling salesman of the old school; Wellington provincial court at the Dunedin Exhibition; sheep-farming hi Hawke's Bay and tho latest pictures from overseas.
