THE PRODUCTIVE YEAR.

The end of a calendar year is not the best time to pass in review resuits or prospects in production, for the productive seasons do not regard the formal calendai\ They have their own time of cessation and renewal. Yet, while the beginning of January is not a turning point for the farmer interested in wool, dairy produce or meat, there is something to be derived from considering even the partial analysis which the year's end has produced. Nothing sensational in either quantities or prices is disclosed or promised. Past experience should have convinced the country that a sound market has much to be 3aid for it as against one soaring to extravagant levels. There should be no quarrel with the outcome on this score. Apart from

such questions, it is most satisfactory to find that steady work has been pursued to keep the primary industries running healthily. Human effort is the ultimate foundation on which the whole structure rests. Success has not come of itself to the New Zealand farmer. Hard work has brought it, and hard work still continues to maintain it. More than muscle-power is needed. Close attention to quality as well as quantity is required more and more since competition in the world's markets grows keener. If New Zealand offers a better article than her rivals, then the future should contain no fears. To do it is the ideal worth pursuing beyond any other. By the progress made toward its attainment the success of 1925 can best be measured. It is pleasing to be assured therefore that thought has been devoted in the past twelve months to assuring better production as well as more production.
