There was a splendid array of good horses competing at the Auckland Trotting Club's Summer Meeting, and the sport provided at Alexandra Park was some of the finest ever witnessed on the course. The field for the Auckland Trotting Cup was probably the best that has yet contested the event, and it was fitting that the winner, Nelson Derby, should put up time equalling the record for the race, viz., 4m 29 2-ss, previously held by Man o' War. The two winning performances of Nelson Derby stamped him as a horse of class. The buret of brilliancy he displayed when he sprinted round the field in the Ranfurly Handicap made those in front of him look a crowd of moderates. Nelson Derby should achieve further succesfi in the near future. Never at any meeting held previously in Auckland have we witnessed so many good performances by straight-out trotters as we did at the recent summer meeting. Rose Bingen (4m 365), Betty Moko (4m 39 l-ss), Le Todd (4m 36 2-ss), Napland (4m 35 2-Ss), Judge Hancock (4m 375), and Peterwah (4m 37 3-ss), were a select linlf dozen among the good ones we saw in action, and the times they recorded furnished ample proof of their class. One of the most popular victories at the recent meeting was that of Nita Bell in the Premier Handicap. Nita Bell has long been a favourite with Auckland trotting enthusiasts, and as she is now getting on in years and probably nearing the end of her racing career, the win was especially well received. Considering that she went 2m '45 2-5s on the openinpr day Nita 801 l was particularly well handicapped in getting in on a 2m 48s mark. A new record for a milo in saddle was registered at Addington on Snturday last by Bonny Logan, who accounted for Iho Telegraph in 2m 9 4-sa. The previous heat for the Dominion for a mile in saddle was held by Solo, who was credited with 2m 10 4-ss. Bonny Logan is a five-year-old mare by Logan Pointer from Bonilene. and has been a consistently good performer over short courses. She ip owned by Mr. "W. H. Norton, and trained by F. Holmes.
