THE ARBITRATION COURT.
APPOINTING ASSESSORS. SOME LIKELY NOMINEES. In a few days nominations will be called for tho positions of assessors and acting assessors on the Arbitration Court, as the present appointments lapse next March. At the last meeting of the Wellington Trades and Labour Council it was decided to nominate Mr. A. L. Monteith, who was recently defeated as member for Wellington East in tho House of Representatives, as employees' assessor. Mr. Monteith issued a circular defining his policy as a nominee. The present workers' representative is Mr. Hiram Hunter, who has served on the Court for the past three years. Mr. Hunter has circularised the various unions soliciting further support this year, as he is willing to accept nomination for j a second term. He states that he thinks he can- fairly claim that the decisions of the Court during the past three years will compare at least favourably with those given during any period since the Court was established. It is anticipated that nominations will also be made for the position of workers' assessors from Auckland and Christchurch. Mr. T. Bloodworth is mentioned as a possible nominee by Auckland unions, and Mr. CI Renn by Christchurch bodies. There is also likely to be a contest for the office of deputy-assessor for the workers, to act in the event of the inability, through " sickness or "other cause, of the main assessor to sit. The present occupant of this office is Mr. W. ! E: Sill,of Christchurch. - - No intimation has been made by Mr. W. Scott, the employers' nominee on the Court, that he is not prepared to act for a further term, and it is not considered likely that he will be opposed. Nor does it seem probable that there will be any other nomination for the position of act-ing-assessor than that of Mr. B. L. Hammond, who has acted on occasions in the course of the past three years in the place of Mr. Scoti.
