LAUNCH BURNED AND SUNK.
BACKFIRE AND EXPLOSION. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] WAIHI, Saturday. An oil launch, belonging to W. H. Ross, was lost on New Year's Eve. The owner, with a party of friends, had just put out from the wharf when the engine backfired. An explosion that followed ignited the oil in the vicinity of the engine, and in a moment the engineroom was in flames. Efforts at. suppression proved unavailing, and all hands had to put off in the dinghy. The launch sank later in 10ft. or 12ft. of water.
