GOODS LIFT CRASHES.

FOUR MEN INJURED. ACCIDENT IN SYDNEY. Fivo men m a goods lift in"" the old Sunday Times building, in Castlereagh Street, Sydney, had a terrifying experience recently. A sudden fuse blow-out caused the lift to crash 40ft to tho basement. Four of the men had to be taken to hospital. The fifth got out unscathed. Tho lift was coming down from tho top floor, and had reached the 40ft level, wheD it started to slide. Despite the frenzied jamming on of safety catches and powerful grasps on ropes, the speed of the failing lift increased. One man remained seated in a stereo metal pot throughout the exciting dive. He was too astounded to move. The injured are: —Albort Kcnrick, aged 42, fractured rib. Frank Boyle, aged 39, contusions to right thigh muscles. Arthur Steel, aged 26, contusions and George Saxey, aged 23, sprained wrist: and elbow. Kenrick was the driver of the lift. He strenuously endeavoured to prevent the fall, but it was impossible. Eventually, when tho lift crashed, the heavy stereo pot tilted and struck Kenrick on tho side. Fortunately it did not contain any molten metaL Kenrick stated later that he had been in three lift smashes previously, not in the same building, and tho worst injury he bad received was a fractured knee cap. The men all considered that they had had extraordinary escapes.
