A COCOANUT PLANT HOLDER.
An ordinary cocoanut makes a very novel and lasting holder in which to plant a fine fern. After extracting the " milk " from the nut, by means of holes at the wide end, make a well-defined circle, about onethird from the top of the other end, and with a small saw cut through this circle. The flesh of the cocoanut can then ho carefully scraped out of the shell for use in various; ways. When this is done, bore or- burn three holes about half an inch from the top edge, at eqiml distances from each other, and through these fasten wire by which to suspend the holder. Before putting the soil in the nut make sure that the three holes at the bottom are well open, and place a few pieces of broken (lower-pot. or small stones for drainage. The trouble taken to make one of these holders is well wortli while, as they last for years, and ferns, such as maiden-hair or those of similar fine growth, thrive splendidly when planted in them.
