PETER'S TRICK.

Snip the Snail was having a snooze when lie heard " Lopoty-lop," and Kitty the Kangaroo camo along. " Bend your head down, Kit," he whisipered, " I heard a little secret just now." Kitty gave a leap, bent doivn, and arranged her right ear close to Snip's mouth.*

" I heard Peter Porcupine talking to ols Mrs. Owl," said Snip. "He asked her 1 ' to tell him of something that would maktf kangaroos fall asleep. She whispered 1 something to him and he ran off with a basket. You see! He's out for something! So take care!" Sure enough Peter came along that minute carrying a basket of funny leaves. ,

" Do tttste them," he said gushingly to Kitty, " .they've a lovely taste." Kitty pretended to eat some, then she lay down pnd pretended to fall asleep. "Oh, what a lark!" sniggered Peter, turning asidfe to have a grin. " Now I'll go and get the potatoes she's been growing in her garden." He had just ■,lifted a spadeful when Kitty gave two leaps and a hop and Peter shot away from those potatoes at about a mile a minute..

" I've been tricked!" he shouted angrily to old Mrs. OwL "So you have," sho answered mildly, and then, blinking her wise old eves, she added, " trickers are always tricked by their own tricks!" " Oh, don't try and talk sermons!' j:aid Peter angrily. "That's sense, not sermons!" said the Owl yawning. "Lovely potatoes they were!" blubbered Peter. " Oh, wait till I pay her cut!"
